THE LOST HONOR OF KATHARINA BLUM 1975 (Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum oder: Wie Gewalt entstehen und wohin sie führen kann) Directed by Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe Von Trotta ** 106 minutes ** In German with English subtitles
This film is directed by Margarethe von Trotta and her partner Volker Schlöndorff (The Tin Drum), and based on the hard-hitting book by Heinrich Böll (The Clown). It's an exposé on the modern war on terrorism and the instant emergence of a police state in times of crisis. What's the story? One evening at a party Katharina meets a man who she ends up taking home and spends the night with. The next day, the police burst into her apartment, but fail to find the suspected terrorist they've been hunting down. So instead, they arrest Katarina for harboring a criminal. Immediately she becomes a media sensation and finds herself caught in the crossfire of modern society - the ruthless interrogation of the police, the exploitation of her life by the media, along with harassment from her neighbors and the public at large. Katharina's ordinary life is suddenly turned inside out, and there is no place she can turn to.
This film is a striking examination of the power of the police in conjunction with the mass media, which makes it one hell of a relevant film these days. A German film made in 1975, it is a story which could have occurred today in the anti-terrorist climate of America and Europe. The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum is not a film about terrorism; rather it is a film about the devastating consequences of experiencing counter-terrorism. It is also a film about the power of media, its ability to create the "reality" it reports, but most sharply, about how in the process it also destroys the reputations of innocent people caught up in the fury of current events.
The lead actress Angela Winkler gives a fierce performance as Katharina, but the entire movie - from its script writing to its cinematography - is riveting.
