Earlier this month, beloved Austin, Texas-based singer, songwriter and artist Daniel Johnston passed away. This probing, empathetic film examines Johnston's life, work, and struggles. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, the self-taught Johnston found connection through lo-fi home recordings of his stripped-down, emotionally direct music. Using a blend of archival footage, home movies, and thoughtful interviews with Johnston, his family and friends, Jeff Feuerzeig’s extraordinary documentary draws us into his eccentric private world, recounting Johnston’s transformation from cult musician into indie icon. Watch the trailer.
