Alfonso Cuarón: Y Tu Mamá También
Short url:
Fresh off the critical and artistic success of Alfonso Cuarón's Roma (2018), we look back at this director's groundbreaking early work. Tonight, a screening of his steamy summer bromance Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001).
Best friends Julio (Gael Garcia Bernal) and Tenoch (Diego Luna) are on the brink of adulthood. When their girlfriends leave on holiday, the 17 year-olds decide to explore their romantic freedom. They meet Luisa (Maribel Verdú) an attractive older woman, and convince her to take a road trip. Along the way, tensions arise between the two friends. Alfonso Cuarón’s celebrated coming-of-age tale caused a stir for its frank depiction of teen sex and drug use. But beneath the film's steamy surface is a sober critique of class, masculinity, and privilege in millennial Mexico. Verdú cannily subverts the male fantasy stereotype, while real-life friends Bernal and Luna give breakout performances as boys struggling to become men. Watch the trailer.
Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, 2001, Mexico, 106 minutes, In Spanish w/ English subtitles.
