Summer Love: Moonrise Kingdom
Passions, like temperatures, run high in the summer. But summer romances tend to burn brightly and fizzle out by the fall. Summer Love highlights some of cinema's most mercurial love stories. Tonight we watch Wes Anderson's whimsical coming-of-age fable Moonrise Kingdom (2012).
After meeting in the summer of 1964, shy and intelligent Sam (Jared Gilman), becomes passionate penpals with the equally eccentric Suzy (Kara Hayward). When Sam finds himself at Camp Ivanhoe, a summer wilderness camp on the island where Suzy lives, the two run away together. As a storm approaches, Sam's scoutmaster (Edward Norton) and Suzy's parents (Frances McDormand and Bill Murray) form a search party to find the young couple. Wes Anderson's gently moving story of first love brims with oddball comedy and bittersweet nostalgia. Stranding his sensitive young characters on an island full of dysfunctional adults, Anderson envisions Sam and Suzy's magical, yet perilous retreat as the first awkward steps toward adolescence.
