Mother Dearest: Mommy
Mother-child relationships aren't always the easiest. Unfulfilled expectations, control issues and unbounded care create the emotional material for endless family dramas. Mother Dearest looks at the ways unexpected turns of motherly love have been caught on screen. Tonight we look at Xavier Dolan's capital "D" drama Mommy (2014).
Recently widowed Diane (Anne Dorval) brings home her teenage son Steve (Antoine Olivier Pilon) after he is expelled from an institution due to violent behavior. Although he is glad to be reunited with his mother, Steve's unpredictable fits of anger jeopardize Diane's already precarious life and cast a dark spell on the bond they share, until Kyla (Suzanne Clément), a shy neighbor, offers to help. Returning to the topic of conflicted mother-son relationships explored in his debut feature, Xavier Dolan unsparingly depicts Diane and Steve's desperate attempt to hold on to the hopeful threads of an otherwise destructive connection. Come watch this stunning film-- winner of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize-- on the big screen. Watch the trailer.
