Bad Musicals: Xanadu

To help kick off our weekly Dam'd Karaoke nights, we've chosen the very best in bad musicals. Off key, campy, and just plain silly, these misbegotten musicals are the perfect opening act for our Dam'd drunken singers. Tonight, we take a look at the lovably silly roller disco fiasco Xanadu (1980).

Sonny (Michael Beck) is a talented designer of album covers, fed up with his annoying boss. When he meets lovely young Kira (Olivia Newton John), Sonny follows the mysterious muse to an abandoned nightclub. Inspired to escape his dreary life, Sonny teams up with aging entertainer Danny (Gene Kelly) to transform the old building into a roller disco. Robert Greenwald's goofy disco musical combines Greek myth, lavishly designed dance sequences, and cheesy animation in an endearing tale of showbiz dreamers. With a catchy soundtrack supplied by Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra, Xanadu is an irresistible camp curio from the dawn of the 80s. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Robert Greenwald, 1980, USA, 96 minutes. In English.
