For the third edition of Disco Diaspora, Fwd: Gher Space [www.facebook.com/fwdgherspace/] welcomes Amsterdam based trans and queer Brazilian artists Vita Evangelista and Mavi Veloso. In response to the recent far right shift in Brazilian politics and ongoing coloniality, Evangelista and Veloso have curated music videos which simultaneously embrace insurgency and festivity in the performative and sonic traditions of Brazil.

Brazilian people have long deployed music, poetry, dance and performance art to oppose gendered, classed, racialized and political violence. Building on this spirit of resistance, Evangelista and Veloso present a mix of contemporary upbeat feminist, trans and queer, camp, and satirical music videos from Brazil, as well as older clips from Brazilian artists who were forced into exile. These videos trace the development of a poetic style: a lyrical tradition forged in response to censorship during the military dictatorship in the 70s and 80s.

Moving towards the contemporary moment by drawing from a variety of sonic styles and traditions, including the Tropicália movement, Evangelista and Veloso will ultimately bring the heat of resistance to the dance floor with a selection of music videos from the vast genres of contemporary queer and trans pop, Brazilian hip hop, tecnobrega and funk.

At midnight, Mavi Veloso will perform a selection of original songs and covers in an experimental music performance intertwining dance theater elements. The performance is part of #iwannamakerevolution, a transdisciplinary project addressing migration, identity and gender transits in the body.

We call on our fellow earthlings to join us on the Dam'd dance floor to invoke spiritual and somatic collectivity for survival in dark times.

Entry is €8 (cash only!)

Mavi Veloso works with performance, dance, music, exploring identity, queer trans, drag and fashion elements. She is currently developing the project #iwannamakerevolution, about placement and displacement, mutant and in transit bodies.
