Paprika & Anime Secret Screening
Short url:
In this special summer double feature, we present Satoshi Kon's mindbending masterpiece Paprika (2006) with a very rare psychedelic Japanese animated feature from the early 70s. Adults only!
Paprika @ 21:00
In the not-too-distant future, rogue psychotherapist Dr. Atsuko Chiba uses a revolutionary device called the DC Mini to enter her patient's dreams, appearing as her alter ego Paprika. When a prototype is stolen, she dives into the dream world to find the culprit before minds are destroyed. Satoshi Kon's bizarre and beautiful anime swansong brings this brainy premise to colorful and vivid life, filling the frame with hallucinatory imagery. Its dense, detailed rendering of the dreamscape makes Christopher Nolan's similarly themed Inception look like a drab flowchart by comparison. Part mystery, part sci-fi, Paprika transports us to a future where the border between dreams and reality has all but dissolved, and where the human unconscious is the final frontier of social control.
