Harold and Maude & Something Wild

Short url:

For those who like their romantic comedies on the dark side, we present Hal Ashby's beloved cult classic Harold and Maude (1971) with Jonathan Demme's anarchic road trip romance Something Wild (1986).

Harold and Maude @ 22:00

Harold (Bud Cort) is a disaffected, death-obsessed 18-year-old with a habit of faking suicide. Though his wealthy mom wants to fix him up with a nice normal girl, Harold would rather attend strangers' funerals and drive around in his hearse. When he meets Maude (Ruth Gordon), a free-spirited 79-year-old, the two begin an unusual love affair. Hal Ashby's pitch black romantic comedy is one of the most celebrated cult films of all time. With its winningly weird performances, macabre humor and lovely soundtrack by Cat Stevens, Harold and Maude celebrates life and love found at the margins. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Hal Ashby, 1971, USA, 91 minutes. In English w/ English subtitles.

Something Wild @ 23:45

Straitlaced square Charles (Jeff Daniels) meets free-spirited Lulu (Melanie Griffith) and sets out on a impulsive road trip, leaving his white collar job and family behind. The unlikely lovers turn up at Lulu’s high school reunion and find themselves on a collision course with her violent ex Ray (Ray Liotta, in his breakout performance). Jonathan Demme’s vibrant road movie veers between sexy slapstick comedy, sober drama and nerve-jangling suspense. Released in the midst of Reagan-era greed and conformity, Something Wild is about acts of rebellion, big and small. The film’s expressive color palette, fleet camerawork and irresistible score (The Feelies, David Byrne, Fine Young Cannibals, The X, Sister Carol) combine to make this a very wild ride. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Jonathan Demme, 1986, USA, 113 minutes. In English w/ English subtitles.
