Stephen Hawking Tribute: A Brief History of Time & Primer

We pay tribute to the late Stephen Hawking with a screening of Erroll Morris' probing 1991 documentary A Brief History of Time, named for the cosmologist's groundbreaking book. Then, we show Shane Carruth's 2004 sci-fi puzzler Primer, the most scientifically rigorous time travel movie ever made. The program will include clips from Hawking's many appearances on television.

A Brief History of Time @ 19:30

Erroll Morris' acclaimed documentary traces the extraordinary life story of cosmologist Stephen Hawking from his early years as a brilliant but unfocused Oxford student to the emergence of his revolutionary theories on time and the origins of the universe. Through frank interviews with family, friends, and the subject himself, Morris explores how Hawking's gradual paralysis from ALS, pushed him into a period of restless research. Departing from the earthbound fomula of the biopic, Morris lets Hawking take us on a personal tour of the universe, exploring (and explaining) black holes, the Big Bang, and the limits of human consciousness.

Directed by Errol Morris, 1991, USA/UK/Japan, 81 min. In English w/ English subtitles.

Primer @ 21:30

Aaron (Shane Carruth) and Abe (David Sullivan) are engineers hustling to launch a tech startup, when they accidentally invent a time machine in their garage. Relocating "the box" to a nearby storage facility, the pair design a rigorous protocol to experiment with time travel, while making money on the stock market. But Aaron and Abe begin to distrust one another (and eventually themselves), as the box unleashes a dizzying amount of alternate timelines and parallel lives. Shane Carruth's fascinating sci-fi feature is a narrative labyrinth, exploring the metaphysical and moral consequences of time travel. Made for a mere $7,000-- most of it going to the purchase of film stock-- and unfolding over a lean 77 minutes, Primer is a stripped down, but dense and disorienting head trip. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Shane Carruth, 2004, USA, 77 min. In English w/ English subtitles.
