American cult director John Waters and the renowned Russian filmmaker Kira Muratova both seem to love humans, while being aware of our capacity for misery and dependence. This results in a powerful anthropological effect that their characters produce simply by behaving naturally. Taking place on the evening of Russia's presidential elections, this program highlights Waters' work with the immortal "egg lady" Edith Massey in his breakthrough shock comedy Pink Flamingos and Muratova's direction of her own obscene muse Renata Litvinova in the comedic drama Three Stories. Clips from other collaborations by the directors and these idiosyncratic actresses will precede each feature.

Pink Flamingos @ 19:00

The notorious outlaw Babs Johnson (Divine) lives with her aging, egg-obsessed mother Edie (Edith Massey) and criminal son Crackers (Danny Mills) in a kitschy trailer park on the edge of town. When a tabloid paper names Babs "the filthiest person alive," black market baby dealers Raymond and Connie Marbles (David Lochary and Mink Stole) set out to destroy Babs and claim the title. John Waters' notorious cult classic remains one of the most transgressive films ever made. Though it's filled with abject humor and shocking sight gags, the film's best special effect is its colorful cast of Baltimore weirdos, not the least of which is Edith Massey's indelible and creepy turn as Edie the egg lady. Watch the famous trailer capturing audience reactions in 1972.

Directed by John Waters, 1972, USA, 107 min. In English.

Three Stories @ 21:30

Three morbid short films follow unlikely killers in unusual tales of everyday revenge. Kira Muratova's pitch black comedy observes its characters' crimes at a chilling distance, presenting an amoral vision of human nature. The standout is the film's middle story "Opheilia" written by Muratova regular Renata Litvinova who stars as a hospital archivist determined to find and punish the long lost mother who put her up for adoption. In a funny, feral performance, Litvinova brings an unsettling conviction to her avenging femme fatale.

Directed by Kira Muratova, 1997, Russia/Ukraine, 105 min. In Russian w/ English subtitles.
