Zombies with Braaains: free screening of The Signal
Short url:
Every Tuesday in October, we're presenting "Zombies with Braaains!" a program of intelligent zombie films without a brain-eating "zombie" in sight. Last week, we screened Pontypool, about a deadly virus that traveled through the spoken word, turning its victims into murderous, but oddly loquacious zombies. This coming Tuesday, we're digging up the overlooked 2007 horror/comedy hybrid The Signal, where a mysterious TV broadcast turns viewers into violent killers.
A strange transmission takes over the television, radio and cellphone waves, turning all who see or hear it into raging murderers. As the signal spreads its lethal message, Ben tries to locate his lover Mya and escape her jealous husband Lewis. This audacious low budget horror film unfolds in three parts, each made by a different director in a unique style, and each told from the perspective of one of its three characters. Frightening, funny and bleak, The Signal is a "zombie" apocalypse thriller, a blood and guts black comedy, and an end-of-the-world love story that charts a romantic triangle in the midst of social collapse.
Directed by David Bruckner, Dan Bush & Jacob Gentry, 2007, USA, 103 min.
