Screening: Pride!
Short url:
In 1984, Margaret Thatcher's government tried to privatize the coal mines of Britain, and to destroy the most organized workers movement in the UK, the National Union of Miners (NUM). When the NUM went on strike, the Thatcher government blocked them from using their strike funds - if the striking miners couldn't use union money, they'd be starved back to work, Thatcher thought. A small group of queer socialists in London came together for an act of radical mutual aid, establishing Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM). LGSM travelled to mining communities in Wales to meet and strategize with miners, networked with other queer communities in the UK, and by 1985, they'd raised about £86,000 (roughly 103.000€ today) to help the miners keep up the fight! In return, miners groups became some of the loudest voices on the Left to fight for LGBTQ+ rights!
