Five Broken Cameras 2011
Short url:
Directed by Emad Burnat & Guy Davidi
94 minutes

This is a fascinating documentary, made by a farmer named Emad Burnat in the West Bank village of Bil'in, giving us a riveting example about how we can use a simple thing like a camera as a means of fighting violence. Burnat bought his first camera in 2005 to document the birth of his son, but as Israeli settlements took over more and more land illegally from the Palestinians, Burnat took his camera to record the situation. Feeling helpless in the face of the powerful occupiers he felt at least he could document what was going on—the land grab, the non-violent protests, the lives lost resisting the occupation, and the destruction of their entire world. Once the Palestinian's homes and fields of olive trees are bulldozed, walls are built so they can't return.
The title of the movie of course refers to the fact that whenever Israeli IDF soldiers see this farmer with his camera taking pictures of what is happening, they smash it. The spectrum of this documentary is both dark and bright at the same time—it's harsh but also incredibly inspiring. The spirit of this farmer is amazing. This flick is engaged, intimate activism at its best... it's human and relevant. It is the kind of cinema there should be more of, connected to real life and made with determination and commitment.
