Climate and Film: How Much Can We Mine to Save the Climate: Protests Against Lithium Mining

Short url:

Attention, the Prague event was moved to the Trhlina infoshop (Jaromírova 9, Prague - Nusle)

For spring, RE-SET (the Platform social-ecological transformation) has prepared a continuation of the series of film nights called Roots of the Climate Justice Movement. This time it will focus on movements from the Global South. Over the course of four evenings, you will see films chronicling the history of the climate justice movement, accompanied by open discussion among all participants on selected topics.

The film nights will be held irregularly (save the dates, see below) starting on February 22, always on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm. The screenings will take place at the Zdena Community Centre in Prague (Tusarova 41) and at the Tři Ocásci café in Brno.

Lithium is a key metal in renewable energy production and therefore plays an important role in combating climate change. Demand for this material is growing rapidly every year and lithium deposits are coming under pressure from mining companies. At the same time, it is also becoming clear that unless rich countries consume much less energy than they do now, the lithium resources available on the planet will not be sufficient.

What are the threats posed by lithium mining? How does it affect local communities and how are people trying to resist it? We look at the documentary In the Name of Lithium about lithium mining in Argentina. The documentary is screened with English subtitles.
