Cinema of the Dam'd presents Mark Jenkin's Bait (2019), a surprise sensation of British independent cinema and this year's BAFTA award winner for outstanding debut.

In a small Cornwall coastal village, fisherman Martin Ward (Edward Rowe) is bogged down by muddy finances and faces a rising tide of gentrification. Martin's attempts' to eke out a living are frustrated by his brother's choice to quit fishing and use the family boat for touristic cruises, Meanwhile, a couple of well-heeled Londoners have bought his childhood home, with plans to "remodernize" it, pushing Martin to the brink. Mark Jenkin's idiosyncratic indie hit looks and feels like something from a lost era. Shot on 16mm black & white film, with a hand cranked camera, and edited with an outstanding sense of rhythm, Bait draws on the primal language of silent and experimental cinema. This is an extremely tactile film where every shot is urgent, telling a story that is both topical and timeless. Though its scratchy handmade aesthetics evoke the past, Bait reminds us that cinema is still very much alive and kicking. Watch the trailer.
