MARY JANE'S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE    1997 Directed by Sarah Jacobson 98 minutes In English, without subtitles

The underground cinemas here in Amsterdam are always tying to put a spotlight on film-makers who have never been recognized as much as they should have. A case in point is Sarah Jacobson. She helped spearhead the DIY movement, and was embraced by the Riot Grrrl scene. She was a maverick artist based in NYC where a new generation of female filmmakers were cropping up, and Jacobson's feature length debut 'Mary Jane' was at the forefront of it all. Why have so few people heard of her then? Well, there are several reasons, but the least isn't the fact that she tragically died of cancer when she was only 32 years old. Therefore she only made one feature, which was shot on super 8, along with a handful of shorts.

Fed up with the movie scene, she said "I wanted to make films in which women didn’t get killed, raped or married—cool films about cool women." This unsentimental film is about a teenage girl growing up who learns about sex from a female perspective. It is a fuck-you to all the mainstream movies that cover this subject in a glossy and phony way. Jacobson was always involved in the music scene, and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth was a big fan of hers. Therefore we also see cameo glimpses of musicians on the counter-culture fringe, including Jello Biafra and avant-garde film-maker George Kuchar. The music that seeps into the soundtrack includes Babes in Toyland and Mudhoney.

This will be a high-definition screening.
