Georgian cinema has a long history, reaching through the country’s turbulent past to the birth of the medium. Admired by classical filmmakers across the world for its unique cinematography, Georgia fashioned a rich cinema tradition with a treasure trove of classics that are often overlooked by international audiences. In honor of Georgian Independence Day (the 26th of May) we present Georgia on My Mind, a weekend-long program, showcasing a trio of rarely-screened films.

Based on two epic poems by the venerated 19th century Georgian poet Vazha-Pshavela, The Plea (also known as The Prayer) vividly depicts a clash between rival Khevsureti and Kisteti communities in the Caucasus mountains. As the main characters come at odds with their fellow villagers for showing respect to their enemies, vicious revenge ensues. Hypnotic and elusive, The Plea is an extraordinary feast of cinematic play with light and shadows that fill the severe landscapes with archaic imagery and symbolism worthy of its epic narrative. A moving critique of religious antagonism and a mesmerizing call for peace, this masterpiece by Tengiz Abuladze is one of the cornerstones of world cinema.

Directed by Tengiz Abuladze, 1967, Georgia, 76 minutes, In Georgian w/ English subtitles.
