Hangover Matinee: My Beautiful Laundrette
Short url:
Join us for a special matinee screening of Stephen Frears' sublime drama about the opening of a laundromat in a working class London neighborhood. The film follows Omar (Gordon Warnecke) an optimistic young Pakistani immigrant who is given the chance to fix up a rundown coin laundry business. Omar enlists the help of his ex-boyfriend Johnny (a young Daniel Day Lewis), who runs with a gang of racist skinheads. With its focus on anti-immigrant tensions and interracial gay love in a rapidly gentrifying London, this groundbreaking film penned by Hanif Kureishi feels more relevant than ever. The film is especially worth revisiting as Daniel Day Lewis retires from acting this year, and following the announcement of Kumail Nanjiani's adaptation of My Beautiful Laundrette for US television. Watch the trailer.
