Amnesty Cinema Night: NGO (Nothing Going On)
Short url:
Come and watch this humorous take on Africa's invasion by NGOs and their detrimental effects on the image of the continent and its people. This is part of our Amnesty Cinema Night series featuring some of the most engaging and dynamic films about human rights, featuring guest speakers. All of our collections go to charity! Best friends Tevo (Richie Tevin) and Zizuke (Arnold Aganze) set up an NGO to support the education of women and girls in Masese, a slum in the Ugandan town of Jinja. But they quickly face some very real obstacles. In desperation, they call on a local expert (Prince Okuyu), who becomes their mentor in the NGO racket. The plan works and the funding comes through - giving them the care-free party lifestyle and fancy clothes they've been craving. They soon forget about the people of the Masese slum until Anthony (David Cecil), a filmmaker and minister, is sent to Uganda on behalf of their American donors to document the impact of the NGO. The debut feature by Congolese writer, director, and actor Arnold Aganze is a knowing satire about the NGO industry and its sometimes dubious efforts to "save" African women and girls.
