On Wednesday 6 February, the Stansted 15 activists were spared jail, for taking part in an action in March 2017 that stopped a deportation charter flight to Nigeria and Ghana. They were given sentences and an unprecedented conviction of terror-related offences. Many are calling this a disturbing trend: of a wider clampdown on migrant solidarity.
On the same day of the court case, a mass deportation charter flight to Jamaica took dozens of people away from their friends and family in the UK. In spite of rising awareness and greater solidarity actions, every 49 minutes, someone is taken from their life in the UK to another country, by force. Not by a rogue kidnapper, but by outsourcing companies acting on behalf of the UK government.
Of the 10,706 people removed by force in 2016, one in 7 were by mass deportation – where people of the same nationality are rounded up and shipped out of the UK on a secret, night-time charter flight hired out exclusively for that purpose.
End Deportations platforms acts of resistance to mass deportations. End Deportation’s Casework Team support people at risk of being deported by charter flight by connecting people with legal information, helping to gather evidence for their cases and supporting them in securing legal representation.
