Anticlericalism - from popular revolt to modern opposition. Meeting with Michal Rauszer

Anti-clericalism is rather little associated with the popular strata in Poland. There is a widespread belief that the people in Poland are religious and obedient to the Church. In many cases, this is true. However, when we "scrape" after this religiosity, many things appear under the surface that contradict this popular belief. The people most often manifested anticlerical behavior when the Church got too close to the government. We can find many examples of folk anticlericalism, from disputes with the priest over serfdom or tithes, to folk chants and customs, to the modern Women's Strike.

Michal Rauszer, PhD, is a cultural studies and anthropology scholar. He works at the Faculty of Pedagogy at the University of Warsaw. He specializes in researching and writing about resistance, rebellions, cultural identity and memory studies, especially grassroots memory. He is the author of Inglorious Basterds of Serfdom, The Power of the Subjugated, and Homo Frajer. The Unconscious Dimensions of Culture. He recently published his book, Folk Anti-Clericalism. Polish Struggles with the Church.

"Start Wearing Purple" video.

FILM DESCRIPTION: Choosing hope over despair, Berliners join forces to reclaim their homes from big investors.
Situated in the midst of an inspiring and refreshing movement that has the potential to turn things around around the world, Start Wearing Purple is not just a report and a documentary, but a call.
This documentary follows five Berliners from different backgrounds, countries and histories. They are among nearly two thousand similarly dedicated people who are fighting together for a single cause.
While their personal motivations vary, they all believe they can convince Berlin that the only way to restore housing prices is to eliminate companies from their city.
The stakes are high, the movement strong. But with little to go on, they must overcome overwhelming opposition from the real estate lobby and politicians willing to sell out the city they call home.

ЯНЭК (more info coming soon)

Kacper Zaorski-Sikora in his interventions in urban space (as Bałuty Pany i Panie) draws attention to the unobvious beauty of Lodz, especially Bałuty with which he feels connected, enters into a dialogue with the community of which he is a part. He speaks bluntly about the condition of modern man, his struggle with reality while seeking spirituality and beauty. He draws attention to the charm of the rapidly disappearing space in which he creates - the history-filled walls of Lodz and the wooden houses waiting to be demolished. For his inscriptions and installations, he uses dilapidated walls, often already covered with other inscriptions, and uses a form similar to fan inscriptions (he cares about changing the content while maintaining the form). Initially, the inscriptions were created mainly on walls where the artist had previously painted over racist slogans. Currently, he mainly chooses places that build an appropriate context for the intervention. The artist is keen for his actions to blend into the urban tissue, without being something alien, artificially inscribed in it. The topics he touches on include empathy, a sense of community, tolerance, excessive consumerism, reflecting on the reality around him. With his actions he tries to stop a passer-by for a moment, often to amuse at the same time to raise fundamental questions, to share his own reflections.
