Social Screenings: Lumumba (2000)
Film screening and discussion. The event is in English.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, former prime minister of the Republic of the Congo.
Congo was a Belgian colony since the 19th century, well known for the ruthless exploitation which left millions dead and maimed. June 1960 brought independence to the Congolese people together with hopes for a new beginning under the rule of a first democratically elected prime minister Patrice Lumumba. However, the colonial powers withered away only partially. Shortly after independence, two regions supported by Belgian mining companies declared secession and Lumumba became a target for both Belgium and the USA. After a coup which followed, Lumumba was captured and shot on 17 January 1961.
Let's meet and watch a 2000 movie by Raoul Peck which tells the story of Lumumba's final months.
There will be a short break in the middle of the screening due to its length (2h).
A discussion will follow after the screening as always.
