SPEAKING STATUES
Speaking Statues invites you to our 2nd event focusing on the historical & contemporary usage of visual art to define the colonial narrative & postcolonial figures.

We have some amazing guest speakers: Thaís Muniz & Rayvenn D'Clark. Exploring what Visual Culture is and their own incredible work redefining stereotypes & the hidden figures of colonialism- this is not an event to be missed.

Bios:

Rayvenn Shaleigha D'Clark is a London-born and UK-based sculptor that specialises in lifecasting, bodycasting and prosthetics living and working in Central London. Her practice exposes the black body laid bare - in traction, unencumbered. She is motivated by issues inherent to the African diaspora - including invisibility vs. hyper- visibility, blackness and the notion of the body politic – in a larger discussion of the irregular position of the black body in the contemporary art-world. Here the insatiability of self-referential questioning births a hyper-reality in which authenticity & criticality can be located (in), presenting a welcomed opportunity to break free from reference once and for all.

As an artist of colour, she believes her work negates stagnant, collective Terms of Reference and a persisting 'outsider' status, and it is this ideological positioning that she hopes to question within her practice whilst scrutinising the fragile balance of power that exists between galleries and the artists who seek to modify long- standing institutional narratives.

Thaís Muniz is an artist and designer, who lives between Brazil and Europe, searching and sharing the aspects of Afro-Diasporic culture from the plurality of the turbans and head wraps, and its place on art, politics and aesthetics. Muniz has been carrying a research that connects history, meanings and re-signification of the head wraps symbology for women of color in the last 6 years, and taken its culture from museums to different sort of events around the world. Pioneering the practices around this subject, was considered one of the most influential black women in Brazil on web in 2014 by Geledés and Blogueiras Negras portals. Through Turbante-se she has been producing theoretical and practical contents, recording stories, leading workshops and performances to spread splashes of colors and empowerment in many heads and bodies everywhere.

The London Anarchist Bookfair has been a crucial fixture in the anarchist calendar since 1983. This year the bookfair is on what -we hope- is a very brief hiatus.
