Ash Wednesday is a poignant short musical that addresses important social issues such as racism and police brutality in Rio de Janeiro. It tells the story of Demétria and her daughter during the last day of Carnival, when a police raid dramatically impacts their lives. Structural racism and social conflicts are at the heart of this all-singing, all-dancing musical short that is brought to life with the help of rhythmic drumming and other Brazilian sounds. Directors Bárbara Santos and João Pedro Prado recreated an authentic favela setting for their drama filmed at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf (Germany) which features top-notch performances from their cast.

The movie was screened at the 2023 Berlinale (Perspektive Deutsches Kino) amongst numerous other film festivals and we are super excited to have the opportunity to screen it in presence of the cast @ Cralle on the 26th of January🌟
