Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Army Of Shadows (1969)
Army_Of_Shadows

Sunday November 9th 2014, Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema by Jeffrey Babcock: Army Of Shadows (L'Armée des Ombres). Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, 1969, 145 minutes, in French with English subtitles. Door opens at 8pm, film begins at 9pm.

Who could believe that in 2006 when American critics were voting for the best film of the year, they would choose a 37-year-old French thriller about the Resistance during World War II? How could that even be possible? Its possible because this film hadn't ever been shown in America, despite the fact that it was considered a masterpiece for decades here in Europe.

Directed by the mesmerizing Jean-Pierre Melville, whose participation in the Resistance qualifies Army of Shadows as an authentic and haunting account of the events during the war. Melville doesn't treat the subject lightly... in this film death hangs over every scene like a terrible shroud. Army of Shadows makes Spielberg's movie about WW II look like a Disney film (which it is). I don't mean in the sense of violence (because this film has very little)...I just mean in terms of sincerity, it's dark mood and authenticity. Spielberg is pure fantasy and is more interested in spectacle than honesty. If you want to know what it was like to live under Nazi occupation, then don't turn to America, but to this French classic which depicts the situation better than any other film that I know of.

Army of the Shadows follows the the harrowing actions of the French resistance movement and the enormous risks they took. Its exquisitely shot (all in muted blues and greys), and the acting is riveting by everyone involved, especially by the leads- Lino Ventura and Simone Signoret. Tense and pensive, this is a film that everyone should be seeing these days... especially since so few people today seem to understand the meaning of solidarity and fighting for one's beliefs.

A real gem, and it will be a high-definition screening.

Renter Rebels: against the sale out of the city

Tonight Joe’s Garage is cooking for an info and experience exchange days we plan between on the 21th and the 22th of November (dates are preliminary for now).

Then we are welcomming people from Berlin to screen with us the very recent film about the Renter Rebels in the Berlin, a quite popular and diverse movement that emerged in the last couple of years and that struggles against massive gentrification and the forced evictions of renters that take place in at high pace. That weekend shall serve as space for discussion and exchange with the people from Berlin, about experiences being made in struggle, the urban restructuring that goes on in Berlin, and the self-organisation of all kinds of people to fight against it.

Besides of being inspirational it shall also be a space to come together and to exchange ideas and experiences related to the housing situation in Amsterdam, the gentrification, housing speculation and office building madness that goes on with no real plan or actions to stop it, the criminalization of squatting since 2010 and the fact that people are drawn out from their homes, neighbourhoods and social networks (not the ones at Facebook) if work is precarious or wages are too low to afford the high and rising rents, even in the social housing sector, while so called housing corporations like Ymere or De Key (just to name a few) intentionally empty their houses from low income renters in order to make more profits by privatizing or renovating them for a upper class renter or buyer segment.

The city’s politicians and parties are obviously neither interested nor capable in regulating this situation and apparently prefer that Amsterdam becomes an even more elitist city, whose urban development is solely drawn by economic factors and that propagate the myth of the almost natural matter of fact that people should move around every couple of years if life becomes too expensive as the solution for those who are on the losing side. Thus we are further individualised by not being capable of building any relevant local networks that supports a meaningful struggle against this conditions.

Descent housing in its various forms and shapes and the city itself is not for profit but for us, the people, and a basic need of everybody independent of social status. We hope to come together with our various backgrounds as renters, precarious workers, students, renter activists and renter commitees, squatters, radicals, thus basically all of us that are negatively affected by the neo-liberal development of Amsterdam and to get organized in order to propose and realise alternatives and to resist the social cleansing that is threatening us.

Benefiet Voku: Huur Rebellen

Kobanê is not alone! Solidarity dinner
Womens_Defense_Units_YPJ

Thursday November 20th 2014: Kobane is not alone! Solidarity dinner. Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm.

On September 16, 2014, the Kurdish-dominated, Syrian town of Kobanê was attacked by ISIS. After weeks of fierce resistance, the Kurdish fighters of the YPG/YPJ (People's/Women's Defence Forces) continued to hold major parts of the city, while the advance of ISIS finally appeared to have been stopped. During their advance however, ISIS forced more than 200,000 people to flee their homes, pushing them across the border into the South of Turkey. Often they could leave with little more than what they could carry with their own hands and they now have to live under poor conditions in refugee camps. Your donations, in return for a delicious meal, will go directly to the refugees in Suruç, the Turkish border town, where tens of thousands of Syrians have found shelter and are in dire need of simply everything. Thank you for your solidarity!

Sunday 23 November
PerverT CinemA presents: Dead of Night (1945)
dead-of-night-1945-001-poster

Sunday November 23th 2014, PerverT CinemA presents: Dead of Night (1945). Directed by Alberto Cavalcanti, Charles Crichton, Basil Dearden, Robert Hamer. 102 minutes, in English. Door opens at 8pm, film begins at 9pm.

Considered the greatest horror anthology film, the classic British chiller Dead of Night features five stories of supernatural terror from four different directors, yet it ultimately feels like a unified whole. The framing device is simple but unsettling, as a group of strangers find themselves inexplicably gathered at an isolated country estate, uncertain why they have come. The topic of conversation soon turns to the world of dreams and nightmares, and each guest shares a frightening event from his/her own past. Many of these tales have become famous, including Basil Dearden’s opening vignette about a ghostly driver with “room for one more” in the back of his hearse. Equally eerie are Robert Hamer’s look at a haunted antique mirror that gradually begins to possess its owner’s soul, and Alberto Cavalcanti’s ghost story about a mysterious young girl during a Christmas party. Legendary Ealing comedy director Charles Crichton lightens the mood with an amusing interlude about the spirit of a deceased golfer haunting his former partner, leaving viewers vulnerable to Cavalcanti’s superb and much-imitated closing segment, about a ventriloquist (Michael Redgrave) slowly driven mad when his dummy appears to come to life. Deservedly acclaimed and highly influential, Dead of Night’s episodic structure inspired an entire genre of lesser imitators.
